La Chica de Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema)

At the age of 18, the "tall and tan, young and lovely" Heloisa Pinheiro became the girl from Ipanema. Her daily walks to the beach took her past the bar where composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes hung out. The middle-aged musicians were so struck by the teenager's beauty, they turned her sexy sashay into a samba. Then, Stan Getz's 1963 recording of the song (featuring Astrud Gilberto on vocals and Jobim on guitar and piano) spread the smooth bossa nova sound — and with it, Pinheiro's fame — around the world.
